Police Urge Caution When Driving Super Bowl Weekend

Phoenix is gearing up for the upcoming Super Bowl football championship this weekend. This is a popular holiday weekend for many Americans who celebrate with football, a cookout and alcohol. When traveling this Super Bowl weekend, Arizona police urge caution.

One of the easiest things you can do is plan ahead. If you plan on drinking, be sure you have a designated driver. Consider carpooling with others to parties or bars. According to Arizona Department of Public Safety officer Bart Graves, “If you are not headed to the stadium for a Super Bowl-related event, I would stay clear of the 101 along with Glendale and Northern Avenues. For west valley travel I would use I-10 or some of the lower arterials such as Indian School, Camelback or Bethany Home Road.” Avoiding congested areas will decrease the chance of an accident.

If worst comes to worst, just call a cab or take public transit. Valley Metro, for example, has extended service hours on routes to and from Glendale’s Sports & Entertainment District. Taxis will also be able to pick up and drop off near the stadium.

Heightened Police Presence

Police and other law enforcement agencies have announced that they will be out in larger numbers over the Super Bowl weekend. Not only will there be heightened security measures around the stadium, but officers on the roads will be looking for impaired drivers.

Whether you are an Arizona resident or visiting from out of state, it is important to be aware of Arizona’s strict impaired driving laws. Those who are charged and found guilty of a DUI in Arizona can face harsh penalties, even if they are not a resident of the state. Those who have a BAC of .08 to .149 and have not been charged with a DUI before will serve 10 days in jail, lose their license, be forced to use an ignition locking device and pay a heavy fine. Those who are charged and found guilty of a felony or aggravated DUI, which is the most extreme charge, will serve a minimum of four months in prison as well as incur heavy fines and other harsh penalties.
